Aerodynamic measures

In TRANSFORMERS, the focus is to assess the various options and to select the optimal combination in terms of fuel saving potential, loading efficiency and cost.

Options that will be considered are:

  • State of the art lightweight trailer designs;
  • Lift-able roofs to reduce frontal surface and lower drag with the possibility to load voluminous cargo when needed (left picture);
  • Automatic adjustable front deflector (spoiler) on top of the truck(11); Introduction of rear diffuser, side skirts (2), underbody deflectors, aerodynamic wheel housing and boat tail;
  • Closing gaps between truck and (semi)trailer (14, 15)




TRANSFORMERS shall investigate the potential of various combinations by CFD-simulation. The result will be a toolbox of intelligent, optimized aerodynamic devices for trucks and (semi)trailers and a guideline for selecting optimal combinations. Potential fuel savings (= project target) for truck-trailer combinations with optimal aero dynamics are upto 8%.
